During 1994 John Taylor was employed as the Office Manager of the South East TA&VR based in Maidstone and, having access to the local military and TA ranges, set about forming the Branch Small-Bore Rifle Shooting Club. John was rapidly elected Club Secretary at a Branch meeting and whilst he was able to arrange for the Club to use the indoor range at the TA Centre in Boxley Road, Maidstone, the Branch purchased three .22" rifles plus ammunition, targets etc.
Since that time the Club has met once month to allow members to loose a few rounds down the range. This practice has proved its worth at the annual shooting competition held on Grenadier Day - the Boyton Cup Shoot. We have entered more than one team each year and our first success came at Pirbright in 1996 when we won the competition. We were just sorry that, due to its value, we were unable to bring the cup back to Medway.
In 1997 our highest place team was runner up to the Nijmegen Company and in 1998 we were runners up again, this time to the Essex Branch. Obviously more practice was required and in 1999 we brought the title to Medway again. There was no competition in 2000 due to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace but we were ready, and eager, to defend our title and in 2001 it was ours again for the third time.
In 2002 Grenadier day was held at Windsor Racecourse, and the shooting team won the Boyton Cup for the fourth time, this time it was shared with the Lincoln Branch as there was a tie for first place.
The Club is open to all members of the Branch and their families, including children over the age of 16. Also welcome are friends for whom members can vouch.
